Rooibos was first discovered by the Khoisan people of South Africa, who used the leaves for medicinal purposes and herbal remedies. They used the leaves of the Aspalathus Linearis plant to make herbal remedies over 300 years ago. In 1772, then Swedish botanist Carl Thunberg documented the plant, bringing wider attention to its unique properties. Later, in the early 20th century, a Russian settler and tea enthusiast, Benjamin Ginsberg, played a key role in commercialising rooibos as a tea alternative, recognising its potential as a caffeine-free, antioxidant-rich beverage with many health benefits.
Those that consume Rooibos also known as Redbush have claimed that it has a soothing effect on headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns and digestive problems.
Rooibos seeds are planted during February and March. They are tended for 18 months after which they are harvested. Cut Rooibos is bound and milled to a uniform length then bruised between rollers to trigger the fermentation process, which results in the characteristic flavor and sweet aroma.
